WTO DG Lamy says trade expansion is
insurance against financial turbulences

From the WTO: Director-General Pascal Lamy,
at the Geneva Lectures on Global Economic Governance on 6 February 2008,
said that the global trading system during the past 60 years “has
underpinned an unprecedented period of economic growth and development”.
He said that “at a time when clouds are darkening over the world
economy, the Doha Round is the one global initiative that may boost

From the WTO: Director-General Pascal Lamy, in a
speech in Kuala Lumpur on 17 August 2007, said today's challenges are
“resisting protectionist tendencies, investing in policies which ensure
that the benefits of trade are spread fairly among and within countries
and investing in a stable multilateral trading system”. He also
commended Trade Minister Datuk Seri Rafidah Aziz and Amb. Muhamad Noor
Yacob, currently chair of the WTO General Council, for their “tireless

WTO DG Lamy calls for intensive negotiations across the board in
September

From the WTO: Director-General Pascal Lamy, in
opening the Trade Negotiations Committee meeting on 26 July 2007, urged
Members to study the draft texts on agriculture and industrial goods
during the summer break and come back in September “ready to engage in
intensive negotiations”. “We have already come a long way in this Round,
and the distance left to go is not so great — but it will require extra

Release Latest Draft Papers

From the WTO: Agriculture negotiations chairperson
Ambassador Crawford Falconer and non-agricultural market access (NAMA)
chairperson Ambassador Don Stephenson circulated their revised draft
modalities on 17 July 2007. The drafts are based on WTO member
governments’ latest positions in the negotiations and are an assessment
of what might be agreed for the formulas for cutting tariffs and
trade-distorting agricultural subsidies, and related provisions. Their
release kicks off another intensive series of meetings for members to
try to reach agreement, and probably to amend the draft.

concessions needed for Doha success

Director-General Pascal Lamy, in a speech to the
UN Economic and Social Council in Geneva on 2 July 2007, said that what
remains to be done in the Doha Round is “small compared to all the
proposals on the table”. He stressed that “there are billions of people
who are counting on this deal to deliver on the Millennium Development

Negotiations Committee on 22 June 2007, Pascal Lamy stressed that “the
need now is for urgent action to restore confidence that these
negotiations can and will be finished successfully.” He urged Members to
“engage fully in the multilateral process led by the Chairs, and put
your cards on the table over the coming weeks in Geneva so that we can

On March 12-13, 2007, the Honourable Sergio Marchi,
Chair, Canadian Services Coalition, participated in an International
Seminar on "Saving Doha and Delivering on Development". The seminar was
held in New Delhi, India and was organized by the Government of India,
United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, Carnegie Endowment
for International Peace, Oxfam International, National Council for
Applied Economic Research, and CUTS International. Hon. Sergio Marchi
presented during Session V entitled "Services: Engine for Growth?".
Other speakers on this panel were Fernando de Mateo, Ambassador to the
WTO, Mexico, and Chairman, Special Session of the Council for Trade in
Services; and Robert Vastine, President, Coalition of Service Industries
(CSI).
